Kaman Aerospace Electro-Optics Unit Selected For U.S. Navy Airborne Sensor System Development

August 28, 2002

BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--Aug. 28-- Kaman Aerospace's Electro-Optics Development Center (EODC) is part of a Northrop Grumman-led team selected by the U.S. Navy to design and develop the Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System (RAMICS), the company announced today.

Tucson, Ariz.-based Kaman EODC will primarily be responsible for the laser-based target sensor subsystem development. RAMICS, a helicopter-borne system, will consist of the target sensor subsystem, fire control subsystem, gun subsystem, munition subsystem, and software. As the RAMICS prime contractor, Northrop Grumman will integrate these subsystems.

Kaman's 36-month subcontract is valued at approximately $7.6 million. The work will be performed in Tucson.

Kaman EODC earlier participated in the highly successful RAMICS advanced technology demonstration completed in January 2001. That effort demonstrated the prototype RAMICS technology and concept in September 2000 when a U.S. Marine Corps AH-1W helicopter equipped with a prototype RAMICS detected and destroyed a surrogate mine target below the surface of the water.

RAMICS will meet the U.S. Navy's requirement for an airborne rapid mine clearance capability for near-surface and surface moored sea mines. The system will be deployed from the MH-60S helicopter and will provide organic airborne mine defense for Carrier Battle Groups and Amphibious Ready Groups.
